How restaurants get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants

“Where should we eat tonight?” is one of the most common local questions people ask AI. The answers lean heavily on Yelp and Google reviews, then menus and websites for the details. Restaurants lose the recommendation when an assistant can’t read the menu, has old hours, or can’t tell whether they take reservations or have vegan options.

What customers ask AI

Real questions, the way people type or say them:

  • “Best tacos in [neighborhood]”
  • “Romantic dinner spot in [city] that takes reservations”
  • “Kid-friendly restaurant near me open on Sunday”
  • “Restaurants with good gluten-free options in [city]”
  • “Is [your restaurant] open on Mondays?”

Where the answers come from

Assistants build answers from a handful of sources. Which ones they cite varies by assistant, city and week, so treat this as the list to get right, not a ranking.

  • Yelp. Yelp said in August 2026 that its ratings and reviews power ChatGPT’s local results in relevant categories, and restaurants are the core one.
  • Google Business Profile. Hours, menu link, photos, attributes (outdoor seating, reservations) and reviews feed Gemini and Google’s AI answers.
  • Tripadvisor. Perplexity partners with Tripadvisor for travel and dining questions, and it’s often cited for visitor queries.
  • Reservation and ordering platforms. OpenTable, Resy and delivery apps confirm hours, price range and cuisine.
  • Your website menu. A menu in plain text is readable; a PDF or photo of a menu often isn’t.

What AI gets wrong about restaurants

  • Hours, especially holidays and closed days. The most common complaint. An assistant quoting old hours sends people to a locked door.
  • Menu and dietary options. If your menu is an image, an assistant can’t see that you have vegan or gluten-free dishes.
  • Reservations and walk-ins. Questions like “takes reservations” are answered from attributes and booking platforms, not guessed.
  • Whether you’re still open at all. A closed restaurant at your old address, or a “permanently closed” flag, can bleed into your answers.

Fixes that change the answer

  1. Put your menu on your site as text. Not only a PDF. Dish names, short descriptions and dietary labels (V, VG, GF) in HTML are what assistants can quote.
  2. Own your Yelp page. Claim it, match your hours to Google, add photos of real dishes and keep reviews coming.
  3. Set holiday hours ahead of time. On Google and Yelp, before each holiday. It’s the fix diners notice most.
  4. Fill in every attribute. Reservations, outdoor seating, kid-friendly, vegan options, parking. Each one answers a question customers ask AI word for word.

Questions restaurants ask us

Does my Yelp rating decide whether ChatGPT recommends me?

It matters a lot, but it isn’t the only thing. Assistants also weigh what reviews say (“great for groups”, “best birria”), so the words in reviews help you match specific questions.

Should I put my menu in a PDF?

Keep the PDF if you like, but also put the menu on a web page as text. Many crawlers skip PDFs and none can read a photo of a chalkboard.

Can I tell ChatGPT to update my hours?

Not directly. Update Google, Yelp and your website so they agree; assistants pick up the change from those sources.
