Why isn’t my business showing up in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT builds local recommendations from web search, business listings and reviews, and your own website. If you’re missing, it’s usually because one of those is thin, wrong or unreadable: its crawler is blocked from your site, you’re not well listed on the review sites it leans on (Yelp in particular), competitors have more and fresher reviews, or nobody else on the web mentions you.

Check before you guess. Our free check asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini what your customers ask and shows who they recommend instead of you.

1. ChatGPT can’t read your website

ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block it won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers.[1] It’s a different bot from GPTBot, which collects training data; blocking GPTBot doesn’t remove you from search.[1]

Blocks usually happen by accident: a security plugin, a website builder setting, or bot protection at your host. Cloudflare, for instance, blocked AI crawlers by default on new domains from July 2025 and changed its defaults again in September 2026.[2]

Fix: run our free AI website check. It tells you whether OAI-SearchBot and the other AI crawlers are allowed, and gives you the exact change if not.

2. You’re thin on the listings ChatGPT leans on

In August 2026, Yelp told its shareholders that “Yelp ratings and reviews recently began powering ChatGPT’s local experience in relevant categories.”[3] An independent study of 4,607 ChatGPT runs across 12 US cities the same month found Yelp in the business data of nearly 96% of local answers.[4]

Other directories matter too. In a small 2025 BrightLocal test, every AI assistant drew on directories, often industry-specific ones for dentists and lawyers.[5]

Fix: claim your Yelp page and fill it in completely: category, hours, phone, website, photos. Then do the same for the directories that matter in your trade.

3. Competitors have more, better and newer reviews

No AI company publishes how it weighs reviews. But reviews are part of the data these assistants receive, and customers weigh them heavily: in BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers, 68% wanted at least a 4-star rating and 74% focused on reviews from the last three months.[6] Among 350,000+ chain locations studied by SOCi, the ones ChatGPT recommended averaged 4.3 stars.[7]

Fix: ask every happy customer for a review, on Google and Yelp, and reply to reviews. A steady trickle beats a one-time push.

4. Nobody else on the web mentions you

AI assistants trust what other sites say about you. In Whitespark’s 2026 survey of 47 local search experts, the top-rated factor for AI visibility was appearing on curated “best of” lists, followed by mentions on industry sites and in local news and associations.[8] For Google’s AI Overviews, an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found web mentions correlated with visibility far more strongly than backlinks.[9]

Fix: get listed by your local chamber of commerce and trade associations, pitch local “best of” roundups, sponsor something local that gets written up, and make sure your business name is spelled the same everywhere.

5. Your details don’t match across the web

If your Google listing, Yelp page and website show different hours or phone numbers, an assistant may quote the wrong one, or be less confident recommending you. No AI company publishes how much consistency counts, but wrong details cost you calls either way.

Fix: pick one exact version of your name, address, phone and hours, and make every listing and your website match it.

6. It’s just the dice this time

AI answers are inconsistent by design. SparkToro and Gumshoe ran 2,961 tests in late 2025 and found less than a 1-in-100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice.[10] One missing answer isn’t a verdict; missing from most answers is.

That’s why Watch asks the same questions every week and tells you when the pattern changes.

Your checklist

  1. Run the AI website check and unblock any AI search crawlers.
  2. Claim and complete your Yelp page and your trade’s main directories.
  3. Make your name, address, phone and hours identical everywhere.
  4. Build a steady flow of fresh reviews on Google and Yelp.
  5. Earn mentions: local lists, associations, local press.
  6. Re-check regularly. Answers move.

Questions

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

No. There is no way to buy a place in ChatGPT’s recommendations. What you can do is make sure the sources it relies on — your listings, reviews and website — are complete, accurate and easy for it to read.

How long does it take to show up after fixing things?

There’s no published timeline. Listing and review changes have to be picked up by the services ChatGPT draws on, which can take days to weeks. Re-check regularly rather than once.

ChatGPT recommended me yesterday but not today. Why?

AI answers vary from one run to the next. A 2026 SparkToro study found less than a 1-in-100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice. How often you appear across many runs matters more than any single answer.
