How plumbers get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants
When a pipe bursts at 11pm, more homeowners now ask an AI assistant who to call. The assistant answers with two or three names, usually built from your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Angi-style directories and your website. If those sources don’t clearly say you do emergency work in that neighborhood, the call goes to someone else.
What customers ask AI
Real questions, the way people type or say them:
- “Who’s an emergency plumber open right now near me?”
- “Best plumber in [city] for a water heater replacement”
- “Affordable plumber in [neighborhood] with good reviews”
- “Who can fix a slab leak in [city]?”
- “Is [your company] licensed and insured?”
Where the answers come from
Assistants build answers from a handful of sources. Which ones they cite varies by assistant, city and week, so treat this as the list to get right, not a ranking.
- Google Business Profile. Hours, service area, categories like “Emergency plumber” and reviews. Gemini and Google’s AI answers lean on it most.
- Yelp. Ratings and review text that ChatGPT and Perplexity frequently cite for home services.
- Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack and BBB. Lead-gen directories and the Better Business Bureau show up as citations for “best plumber” questions and as proof of licensing and complaint history.
- Nextdoor. Neighbor recommendations are exactly the kind of “who do locals use” signal assistants look for, though what they can read varies.
- Your website. The only place you control that can list every service, every town you cover and your license number in plain text.
What AI gets wrong about plumbers
- Whether you offer 24/7 emergency service. If your hours say 8–5 but you take night calls, assistants answering “open now” will skip you.
- Service area. A profile pinned to your shop’s address makes you look local to one town when you cover ten.
- What you do. Drain cleaning, water heaters, sewer lines and repiping get lumped together; an assistant asked about tankless installs can’t tell that you do them.
- Phone number. Old tracking numbers from ad campaigns linger on directories and get quoted as your main line.
Fixes that change the answer
- Say “24/7 emergency” everywhere it’s true. Set special or 24-hour hours on Google, add the Emergency plumber category, and put the same words on your website and Yelp. Assistants match the question’s words.
- List your service area by town. Set every town you serve in your Google service area, and add a plain list of towns to your website. “Serving Arlington, Falls Church and McLean” beats a map embed a crawler can’t read.
- One page per big job. Water heaters, drain cleaning, sewer lines, repiping. A short page for each, with prices or ranges if you’re comfortable, gives assistants something to quote.
- Kill stale phone numbers. Search your business name on Yelp, Angi, BBB and Bing Places and replace any old tracking number with the one you answer.
- Show your license. Put your license number on your site and profiles. “Is this plumber licensed?” is a question assistants try to answer.

Questions plumbers ask us
Does paying for Angi or HomeAdvisor leads help me show up in ChatGPT?
Not directly. What matters is that your profile on those sites is complete and has reviews, because assistants sometimes cite those pages. The ad spend itself isn’t something an AI assistant can see.
Why does ChatGPT recommend a big franchise instead of me?
Franchises have many locations with lots of reviews and consistent listings, so they’re easy for an assistant to find and trust. A local shop can compete by being very clear about emergency hours, service area and specific jobs, and by keeping reviews coming.
How do I know which plumbing questions to worry about?
Start with the ones that bring money: emergency calls and water heater replacements. The free check asks questions like those for your city and shows who gets recommended.
